Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the party to implement meaningful reforms to prevent it from being dominated by a single individual.

In a statement issued on December 18, 2024, he warned against repeating past mistakes and stressed the need for deliberate action to “rescue” the party following its electoral defeat.

Mr. Boakye Agyarko’s comments come amid growing calls for reforms within the NPP after losing in the 2024 general election.

While supporting the push for reforms, he cautioned against rushed and uncoordinated efforts. Drawing from experiences, he recalled how a similar push for reforms in 2009 led to the centralisation of power under one individual, which he believes harmed the party’s progress.

“There is now a call to take our party back, but we must be clear about whose hands we place it in,” Agyarko stated.

He warned against creating a system where a single person controls the party, treating it as personal property while sidelining others.

Agyarko emphasised that the NPP must become a party of like-minded individuals working towards national development.

He also cautioned against turning it into a tool for personal gain or a “cultic organisation” that blindly follows one person’s agenda.

He urged party members to reflect on the past and learn from previous mistakes, highlighting the need for thoughtful and strategic reforms.

“People who forget their history keep making the same mistakes and are forced to start over,” he said, calling for a careful approach to rebuilding the party.
