The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the tragic death of 21-year-old Yabane Deladem Aku, a Level 400 Biological Science student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

A suspect, Daniel Tuffour, has been arrested and is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

According to a police statement issued on Thursday, February 27, 2025, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was found unresponsive behind the Central Laboratory on campus in the early hours of the day.

“She was pronounced dead by medical authorities from KNUST Hospital who examined the body at the scene before it was conveyed to the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement said.

A police examination of the body uncovered marks of violence, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Following further crime scene investigations, the police arrested Daniel Tuffour, who remains in custody as investigations continue.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has personally engaged with the family of the deceased, offering condolences and assuring them that justice will be served.

He also met with KNUST authorities to discuss how the police and the university can collaborate to enhance security on campus and protect students and staff.

The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation into the case and urged anyone with relevant information to assist law enforcement.
