Court docs show slain pastor’s widow slept with alleged killer while he was on mission trip

Harmony Free Will Baptist Church in Ada, Oklahoma, grieved in fresh shock Friday as investigators alleged their late pastor, David Charles Evans, was a swinger and his widow confessed to plotting his murder with a man she spent three nights with while he was in Mexico on a mission trip.

“The circumstances that are now coming to light have taken us by surprise and we are greatly saddened. We serve a perfect Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave His life for us. These revelations do not diminish that truth and we will continue to serve Him,” a spokesperson for the church told KFOR in a statement.

“We are aware that even pastors can succumb to human frailty and we ask that our privacy be respected at this time as we as a church family grieve and process all of these events.”

Pastor Evans was shot dead inside his home last Monday, hours after he warned his flock in a moving sermon that the devil would seek to kill and destroy them for being witnesses to God’s power in the world.

Three days after the pastor was killed, his wife, Kristie Evans, 47, who previously told police that an intruder had shot her husband, confessed to investigators with the Ada Police Department that the intruder, Kahlil Deamie Square, 26, was known to her.

Square, she told police, had spent the night with her on March 17, 18 and 19 while her husband was on his mission trip to Mexico.

Kristie Evans told investigators that she and her husband led a secret life as swingers and met Square for sex at a Super 8 “on more than one occasion” months ago.

“On one of those occasions, Kristie secretly dropped her phone number on the floor for Kahlil,” an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent reported in arresting documents obtained by The Oklahoman. “Kristie continued to communicate by phone daily with Kahlil without David’s knowledge.”

She then asked him to kill her husband and provided him with a gun and bullets. She reportedly left open the backdoor of the home she shared with her late husband on the night of his murder.

At one point, Square crouched down in the couple’s dining room because he was worried about making too much noise. But Kristie Evans urged her lover to “proceed with the plan” to kill her husband.

She said she called the police after her husband was shot, and Square ran through her back door.

The pastor’s widow, who interviewed with investigators several times, also claimed her husband called her names like “slut, fat, ugly and whore.” She shared these concerns with Square, and he replied, “Damn.” She further told her young lover, “it would be nice to have more freedom.”

In his sermon on Sunday, March 21, during which he revealed he had only recently returned from his mission trip to Mexico the week prior, Evans preached about the popularity of Christianity from John 12:1-11.

He examined the final days of Jesus’ ministry on Earth, including why the chief priest in the Scripture wanted to kill Lazarus after Jesus had raised him from the dead.

“This guy cannot catch a break. What an interesting life he’s lived here. You’re alive; you’re dead. You’re brought to life; you’re alive again, now the chief priest wants to kill you. That’s a full life,” he told congregants.

“I mean, ironically. But why? Why kill Lazarus?” he posited before pointing to verse 11, which says, “because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.”

He then told congregants that if their life is bearing witness to the power of Jesus, they should get used to being attacked by the devil.

“Sometimes, I just stop and think. If the devil is not attacking you with everything he’s got in trying to destroy and kill you, maybe [it’s] because you’re not the reason anybody is believing in Jesus. And as a pastor and just as a Christian, what a waste,” he said.
