Digital footprint could ruin your career – IBM Ghana boss to youth
Country Manager for International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Ghana, Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh, has underscored the need for the youth to use the internet wisely.
Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh said a bad digital footprint could ruin the career of anyone hoping to get a job in any corporate or multinational company.
She was delivering a lecture organised by the GIMPA School of Technology on the theme: Leveraging Information Technology for socio-economic development.
The IMB Ghana boss bemoaned how the careers of intelligent, very capable people are ruined due to their behaviour on social media.
“Employers are now looking at our information online and using that to make informed decisions about us so the youth must be careful of the digital footprints they leave there,” she stated.
Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh cited how Harvard withdrew the admission of three young boys because of their information online, to buttress her point.
“When you go online make sure you are not leaving anything that one day will come back and haunt you,” she stressed.
Also, the Rector of GIMPA, Professor Philip Bonzi-Simpson said, the lecture on technology is to address key national and international problems.
“Technology is like fire, it has considerable benefits when it is harnessed and utilised properly but dangerous if not controlled,” he said.
Prof. Bonzi-Simpson urged youth to put into practice what they acquire from the internet to improve their chances of success.
For his part, the Dean of GIMPA School of Technology, Dr. Joseph Adjei said the lecture is to discuss how Ghana could benefit from technology which is a new source of wealth creation.
As part of their contribution, he revealed that, the institution has started the business incubation and technology transfer unit to ensure students are employed after school.
“Our students have a place to develop most of their mobile solutions so that they will not join the already long queue of graduate unemployed youth,” he said.
The initiative he added, is part of GIMPA’s corporate social responsibility to reduce the unemployment situation in the country.
