Dr Yaw Adutwum to go unopposed
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bosomtwe Constituency has decided to declare the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, unopposed to contest the 2020 parliamentary election on the ticket of the party.
According to the Bosomtwe Constituency Chairman of the party, Mr Aikens Addai-Poku, the decision to allow him to go uncontested was due to the good performance of the MP during the past three years in Parliament.
Massive development
He said the MP had brought the much-needed development into the constituency during his first term of office, adding that, massive infrastructural development such as schools, roads, as well as scholarships and other supports to the constituents were enough for the constituency to endorse him to contest again without any hindrance.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic at Kuntanase last weekend, Mr Addai-Poku explained that they were only waiting for the national office of the party to announce the date for primaries where the electoral college would only go and endorse him through popular acclamation.
The constituency chairman said it took the constituency executive four months to go round the entire constituency consulting traditional authorities, the clergy, polling station executive and other stakeholders after which majority of them agreed that he should be endorsed as a sole candidate.
Respect earned
The constituency chairman mentioned, for instance, that the good human relation of the MP with the people had earned him the respect of many people, including even members of other political parties who had seen the good work he has been doing for the nation and the constituency.
Mr Addai-Poku said the output of the MP attracted the respect and applause from the constituency executive of the party and other key stakeholders for him to be elected as the sole candidate for the party in the constituency.
He added that another reason why the people wanted the MP to go solo was due to the fact that he was seen as a good ambassador of Bosomtwe which they were very proud of.
The Bosomtwe Constituency, which happens to be among the strongholds of the ruling NPP in the Ashanti Region, saw a change of MP after the incumbent, Dr Adutwum had defeated the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, during the 2016 primary.
The 2016 primary was the second time Dr Adutwum was contesting after he had been beaten by Mr Osei-Mensah in the 2012 primary.
The Ashanti regional minister was in Parliament for three consecutive terms before being unseated by Dr Adtutwum, who even in his first term of office, was appointed as the Deputy Education Minister in-Charge of the pre-tertiary sector.
Mr Osei-Mensah also rose to become the third Deputy Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament on two occasions before leaving Parliament.
