Ghana Health Service confirms cholera at Ada West and East

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a case of cholera in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra region.

The incident was recorded on October 4, 2024.

The GHS in a statement dated October 14, this year, said public health emergency management committees at all levels, district, regional and national have been activated.

The Ghana Health Service further indicated that “As of 11th October, nine cholera cases had been confirmed in both districts –Ada West and Ada East.

The statement signed by the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye explained that a joint multi-sectoral Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team (PHERRT) from the national, regional and district levels, as well as representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and Environmental Health Units from the two affected districts has been activated.

Similarly, he said, an ‘Alert’ has been sent to all health facilities across the country, with contact identification, tracing and follow-up being conducted.

He also pointed out that an investigation is being conducted into the current outbreak.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye further noted that healthcare workers in the affected areas have been sensitised on case definitions for cholera, sample management and case management.

Daily active community case search is being conducted,” he said, adding “Strict Infection Prevention and Control practices in all health facilities have been enforced.”

He gave an assurance that the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service in collaboration with the relevant sectors and partners would continue to promptly detect and respond early to public health emergencies in the country.
