KNUST authorities suspend all activities around SRC elections

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has suspended – with immediate effect – all activities leading to this year’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) elections.

This decision was taken following a clash between supporters of the two main presidential aspirants during vetting at the Great Hall on Saturday, July 3.

The clash, which degenerated into a crossfire between students of University Hall, popularly known as Katanga, and Unity Hall, popularly known as Conti, resulted in one student sustaining injuries in his palm from a broken bottle.

Some chairs, flower pots and glass doors were damaged.

A statement issued by the Deputy Registrar at the Office of University Relations, Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe, said a committee will be constituted to thoroughly investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations for the consideration of authorities.

It noted that security officers made up of the police and KNUST’s security personnel present managed to restore calm.

“Management wishes to assure all parents, and stakeholders of the University that there is absolute calm and students are going about their normal activities peacefully.

“The University will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for productive academic work.”
