The MTN MoMo has created over 132,000 jobs through MoMo Agents across the country since its inception. According to the General Manager of MTN Mobile Financial Services, Eli Hini, the tremendous growth of the mobile money business has created many direct and indirect jobs in the country.
Speaking at the launch of the Economic Empowerment Programme for the Ghana Federations for the Disable, Mr. Hini said MTN Ghana as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility and the 10th Anniversary of MTN MoMo services in Ghana is reaching out to the Federation of Disability to assess what could be done to empower ‘People With Disability’ in a sustainable manner.
Under this project, 100 physically challenged individuals will be made MTN MoMo Agents across the country. Beneficiaries will be given disability friendly kiosks, mobile phones and some capital to operate MTN Mobile Money business.
“MTN Ghana is proud to have partnered the Federation to execute this project and to see it come to fruition today. We hope that this project will make the beneficiaries self-reliant and reduce the tendency of depending on others for survival.”
He added: “Like a plant breeder, MTN wishes to enhance your living conditions with this project. That is why we designed tailor made kiosk that will support your needs and make it comfortable for beneficiaries to look forward to going to work each day. We want the seedlings to grow into beautiful plants that will yield bumper harvest. However, let me quickly add that, the bumper harvest would not yield that easily: It will need care weeding, pruning etc.”
In this vein, Mr. Hini said the MoMo venture will require the disabled to work hard, commit time and energy into making it successful.
The Minister for Employments and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah said the Draft Employment Equity Policy being developed by the Ghana Federations of Disable is near completion.
The policy is expected to complement existing policies and legislations to promote the wellbeing of PWDs.
“As we speak, discussions are ongoing between Government, Employers, the Private Sector and other key stakeholders on how to structure incentives and stimulus packages for businesses that employ PWDs”. He pointed out.
