The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that the killing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) member in Kumasi on Monday was because of former president John Dramani Mahama’s infamous “boot for boot” comment.
“ . . the impunity is not surprising; considering that the former president’s boot for boot statement appears to underpin the act gravely. The NPP condemns the violence without reservation”.
They are also “as a matter of urgency asking the police to expedite action in bringing the perpetrators to book”.
A shooting incident at the NDC’s Ashanti Regional Headquarters led to the death of one person and the injury of another.
According to reports, the shooting was between a group associated with the NDC known as the ‘Hawks’ and a taskforce; also belonging to the same party.
The NPP reacting to this at a press conference led by Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, Director for Communication said former President Mahama ‘appears to be the inspiration’ for the violence in his own party.
“The biggest question is why is the former President desperate for power? Can that desperation be justified by peddling falsehood about our security in Ghana to the international community? Especially when the former President appears to be the inspiration for such violence within his own party. Is he sincere about contributing to the peace, stability, and prosperity of this nation since he has led the country before and seeks to lead it again?” they asked.
“The NPP is different from the NDC; we perform far better in the interest of Ghana…the Ayawaso by-election demonstrates this clear: while President Akufo-Addo condemns the violence, John Mahama encourage violence; threatening boot for boot and claiming superiority in the use of violence. When the President responded to public concern with the Commission of Inquiry, John Mahama rubbished the eminent persons and chose to peddle cheap falsehood to the diplomatic community,” Yaw Buabeng Asamoah said.
