Operation Halt II enters 4th phase

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun the fourth phase of the operation to rid the nation’s water bodies of illegal mining activities.

According to a statement issued by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on Thursday, May 27, the new phase will focus on the Ankobra River and its tributaries.

“The operation is being undertaken by four hundred and one men of all ranks.

“The public is advised to stay away from mining in water bodies to avoid any action by the forces.”

Operation Halt began last month with 200 officers deployed to ward off illegal miners on the Pra River.

The second and third phases were launched this month.

Ahead of the fourth phase, a high-powered recce team led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, was at some mining sites where the operation covered.

The team realised that illegal mining was still going on, especially in the night.

But it warned that equipment will continue to be destroyed to ensure that the operation is successful.
