Police identify suspects in Mamobi shooting incident during political walk
The police have identified the suspects involved in the Mamobi shooting incident that took place during a peaceful political walk between supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, October 13, 2024, in Accra.
What started as a routine weekend political campaign walk in Mamobi turned violent, resulting in two people being shot and four others sustaining injuries.
In a statement dated October 13, 2024, the police confirmed that they have identified the perpetrators and have launched an intelligence-led operation to apprehend those responsible.
What happened?
The clash occurred between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), following what was initially intended to be a peaceful event.
The keep-fit walk, which both parties typically organise every weekend as part of their campaign activities, ended abruptly when a group of motorbike riders from one side encountered the supporters from the other side.
Eyewitnesses reported that a verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
“After our peace walk, it is rather unfortunate that this happened,” said one of the eyewitnesses who said it was motorbike riders from the NDC side that confronted the supporters of the NPP.
According to him, the clash intensified when one of the NPP supporters allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired several shots.
