Agriculture Minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto resigns

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has resigned.

He tendered his resignation to President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday (10 January 2023).

Dr Afriyie Akoto’s resignation comes four days after the Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, resigned from the government to pursue a campaign to lead the New Patriotic Party into Election 2024.

NPP rules stipulate that any ministers of state interested in running in the race for the party’s flagbearer position must resign from his or her role in the government to concentrate on his or her campaign, so that it does not interfere with governance.

Sources have hinted that the Council of Elders of the NPP is demanding that all presidential aspirants should not wait any further but must resign now to ensure stable governance.
