Will Prof. Avoke Be Reinstated As VC? – Atuguba Asks

Professor Raymond Atuguba of the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana (Legon) has asked if the government will reinstate Professor Mawutor Avoke, as the Vice Chancellor of University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

His questions follow the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision Wednesday that quashed an earlier High Court’s decision which led to the removal Professor Avoke in August 2018.

Supreme Court quashes High Court ruling on Avoke’s removal
The Supreme Court held the High Court in Winneba failed to take evidence from the parties in the case before granting judgment in default, something the court said was in breach of natural justice.

A state issued Wednesday by Professor Atuguba, lawyer for Prof. Avoke suggested he seemed unclear about what the ruling of the Supreme Court would mean for the development in the University which already has constituted a new council and sworn in a new Vice Chancellor.

Prior to the swearing in of, Prof. Atuguba had raised concerns about attempts made by the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, to circumvent legal processes to induct Prof. Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni as new Vice-Chancellor.

The university eventually swore in the new Chancellor who has since been at post but with the latest development, Prof. Atuguba is wondering whether what the position of the government will be.

“Would the government now do the right thing and remove its representatives on the UEW Council, for misleading and embarrassing the President; reconstitute the UEW Council; and have a properly reconstituted and unbiased Council recall Prof. Mawutor Avoke back as Vice Chancellor?

Or would the government treat UEW differently from KNUST in the absence of an Otumfuo to uphold the law and the rights of Prof. Mawutor Avoke?”, he asked.
